Services

Manuscripts

What genres do you work on?

We primarily edit fiction (fantasy, sci-fi, romance, romantasy, thriller, horror, YA) and select nonfiction (memoir, narrative nonfiction, and book-length nonfiction with a strong voice). If you’re unsure whether your project is a fit, reach out—we’re happy to take a look.

What services do you offer?

We offer professional beta reading, structural (developmental) editing, content (line/copy) editing, proofreading, and book formatting and layout. We also provide cover design and self-publishing guidance for authors publishing through Amazon KDP and IngramSpark.

What’s the difference between structural editing, content editing, and proofreading?
  • Structural Editing: plot, pacing, structure, character arcs, clarity, and overall impact

  • Content Editing: voice, flow, readability, consistency, grammar, and style

  • Proofreading: final polish after edits and formatting—typos, punctuation, spacing, and small errors

If you’re not sure what you need, we’ll help you choose the right service.

Do you offer full editing and design services?

Yes. If you want one streamlined process from draft to publishable book files, we offer a complete editorial + design package that includes multiple rounds of editing, professional layout in Vellum, and hard- and soft-cover design in Adobe InDesign.

Do you edit explicit content?

Yes. We’re comfortable working with spicy romance and explicit scenes, and we approach intimate content with professionalism and respect for your voice.

Can you work on series books?

Absolutely—especially if you want continuity support across multiple installments (timeline, character details, worldbuilding rules, style sheet consistency).

Do you edit picture book manuscripts?

Yes. Picture books are some of our favorite works to edit. However, we currently do not offer design services for picture books.

Can you help if I’m not finished writing the manuscript yet?

Yes. Beta reads and developmental edits can be done on early drafts. We can also help you decide what stage you’re in and what will help most right now.

Do you offer sample edits?

Yes. We offer free sample manuscript edits on the first three to four pages (approximately 1,000 words). This helps you see our editing style and ensures we’re a good fit before committing to a full manuscript edit.

To receive a sample manuscript edit, send the first three to four pages (≈1,000 words) of your manuscript to [email protected] anytime, let us know you are looking for a free sample edit, and we will get right to work. We typically return the edited pages within 48 to 72 business hours.

Documents

What kinds of documents do you work on?

We edit a range of documents, including personal statements, academic essays, blog posts, website copy, author bios, blurbs, query letters, synopses, newsletters, pitches, academic papers, and business or brand copy. We have also tactfully and discreetly edited many sensitive letters, including love letters and break-up notes. If you’re not sure whether your document fits, send it—we’ll let you know.

What document services do you offer?

We offer structural editing (step one), content editing (step two), and proofreading (step three) for general documents, with an emphasis on clarity, tone, consistency, and polish.

Can you help with author platforms and publishing materials?

Yes. We can polish query packages, synopses, blurbs, author bios, press kits, and marketing copy so your materials match the feel of your book.

Processes

What programs do you use for editing and beyond?
  • For editing, most manuscripts are completed in Microsoft Word using track changes, comments, and the compare tool. General documents are often edited in Google Docs, depending on client preference. We can also accommodate edits in:

    • Adobe Acrobat
    • Pages
    • InDesign
    • PowerPoint
    • Google Slides
    • Final Draft
    • And others!
  • For interior layout, we use Vellum, the industry standard for self-publishing.
  • For cover design, we use a combination of Adobe products, including InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator.
  • For timeline tracking, we use Aeon Timeline.
  • For our proprietary Blueprints, which can be used long after the edit to support the entire publishing process, we leverage Google Docs excellent collaboration capabilities.
  • For basic grammar, spelling, and punctuation help, we use Grammarly, ProWritingAid, and PerfectIt. We never use AI beyond the basic tools of these programs, which are standard for all editors.
  • For synonyms, we use Power Thesaurus.
  • For securely storing documents, we use Dropbox or Google Drive, depending on the client’s preference.
What will I receive at the end of a manuscript edit?

Manuscript deliverables vary slightly by service, but you can typically expect:

  • An Original Copy of your manuscript.
  • A Track Changes Copy with in-line comments.
  • A Clean Copy (in Standard Manuscript Format) that is ready to be published, after in-line comments are removed.
  • A reader report (for certain manuscript services).
  • A Book Blueprint for manuscripts (documents come with a truncated version), in Google Docs. This Book Blueprint includes our welcome letter with directions on how to use the document, the reader report, our editor notes, our full AI policy, directions for after the edit, a detailed style sheet, location lists, character cards, book parts, Vellum instructions, the editing checklist, and additional resources. This is available for free to anyone at anytime from this link: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1zVEipdx-WzopFupZB2NhNfgtOncZVxPV24tGcM7uFK0/edit?usp=sharing
  • A detailed Aeon timeline PDF.
  • For layout, we send the Vellum source files (to allow you to tweak the layout if you have access to Vellum, which we highly recommend for self-published authors) and generated PDFs (for upload to Amazon KDP or IngramSpark).
  • For cover design, we send the InDesign source files (for editing) and generated PDFs ready for upload to Amazon KDP or IngramSpark.
What will I receive at the end of a document edit?
  • An Original Copy of your document.
  • A Track Changes Copy with in-line comments.
  • A Clean Copy (formatted to your preferred style) that is ready to be submitted or published, after in-line comments are removed.
  • A Brief Blueprint that includes a detailed editing checklist.
Will you rewrite my document or manuscript?

No. Our job is to strengthen your document or manuscript without replacing your style. We’ll make suggestions, flag issues, and improve clarity and consistency, but you remain the author and ultimate decision-maker.

How long will my project take?

Turnaround depends on word count, service level, our availability, and the project length and complexity. We’ll give you a clear estimate before you book. If you have a deadline (due date, release date, preorder, ARC timeline), tell us early, and we will let you know right away if we can accommodate.

Are your services confidential?

Yes. Your work remains fully yours, and we treat every manuscript as confidential. We do not share, upload, or use your content for any purpose outside of providing the service you hired us to do.

What is your AI policy? Do you use AI to edit?

No. We do not use AI tools to edit, rewrite, or generate your manuscript or document content. All editing is done by real human editors—carefully, manually, and professionally.

We do use basic tools such as Grammarly, ProWritingAid, and PerfectIt, but your work will never be fed into generative AI for editing. If you have additional questions about the process or confidentiality, we’re happy to answer them before we begin.

Do you humanize AI-assisted content?

Although we do not use AI to edit, we are happy to edit and humanize AI-assisted content, excluding AI-assisted academic content. However, please know that we strictly adhere to ethical disclosure when preparing manuscripts for publication.

Do you format for Amazon KDP and IngramSpark?

Yes. We can format books for KDP and IngramSpark, including print interiors, covers, and ebooks. We also provide guidance on common upload requirements and file specs.

Can you fix formatting I have already tried to do myself?

Yes—this is extremely common. If your file is fighting you, we can either clean up what you have or rebuild it properly so it prints and reads cleanly across platforms.

Do you provide ISBNs?

No. We don’t provide ISBNs. We strongly recommend getting your ISBNs directly from Bowker and resisting the urge to get a free one from Amazon.

How do I know if your editors are available?

For manuscripts or longer edits, the best place to start is our Availability Calendar here: https://projectpursuitpress.com/services/editing-design/availability-calendar/

This calendar reflects when we are booked with larger projects. However, we are almost always able to accept smaller edits (5,000 words or less) even if our calendar shows we are booked.
